In my art practice I am interested in the potential of architectural and industrial structure as inspiration to create semi-representational sculptural form.  Using innovative and adaptive creative processes I am looking to forms that have potential to generate an effective sculptural awareness which is heightened by a shift in environment.

The geometry of object and space and the creation of powerful and elegant three-dimensional objects motivate me.  Working intuitively, getting beyond the surface of consciousness to resolve work that feels right in terms of scale, proportion and finish.

My intention is not to be specific about any story or load the work with particular narrative, but to allow the viewer to interpret any association or connection for themselves.  In this manner I want the work to provoke recognition and narrative but ask also that they be read as abstract form in their own right.  Shapes that perhaps lurk at the edge of recognition, alluding to things or states of being without fully representing them.

Timber is my predominant material of choice, using its expressive qualities to heighten a sense of presence in the work.  The narrative which lies in the making of the work is also an important aspect, a part which adds to the sum of the final outcome.  Other materials used in my work have included natural fibre rope and steel.

The “Useful Tasks” series of work was part of my PhD practice based research with The Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia. My research was titled "The Primacy of Meaning: consumption, divinity and the machine."
